Overview

SCAD StartUp is a student-run, week-long business design competition born in the SCAD UX Design department.

Led by UX Design students, it brings together majors from across SCAD to tackle real problems, prototype inventive solutions, and pitch to industry professionals, turning the program’s focus on creativity, technology, and innovation into a hands-on experience.

I had the honor of working with 2 other students in creating an animation that encapsulates the StartUp 2026 branding and theme. This year's theme was Design for human connection, so we wanted to make sure the piece incorporated nature with a touch of tech and a ton of playfulness.

My Role

As one of the two main motion designers, I helped ideate, plan, and time our animatic in preproduction, but most of my work came into play in post. I created the 2D animations of the piece, timed and spliced shots, incorporated sound, and whatever else that was needed in order to make the piece a success.

Process

The Beginning

When we started, not only did we need to learn how each other work as designers, but we also needed to produce a strong direction and mood. It was important for us to gather references and make mood/style boards. We were really inspired by specific works from Buck and Hornet. After ideation we went on to create our storyboard.

Story

We knew from the start, we wanted a big flower moment in the beginning that went into the different categories of the competition represented by different coins (Office, Home, and Event). The list of our 3D shots were finalized, however the transitions at this stage needed to be more thought out (Spoiler: we figured it out).
